Priya, a young mother from a remote village, clutched her newborn son tightly, listening to his faint, struggling breaths. From the moment he was born, she knew something was wrong. His tiny body trembled with each inhalation, and his cries were weak. The village doctor could do nothing more than suggest they take him to a city hospital, but for Priya and her husband, a daily wage laborer, this was an impossible feat. Their entire earnings barely covered their food expenses. How could they afford expensive medical treatment?
Priya lived in constant fear, watching helplessly as her baby’s condition worsened. The mere thought of losing him broke her heart, but she had no way to save him. Then, by a stroke of fate, she learned about Swaraj Foundation’s healthcare initiative through a local community worker. Desperate and clinging to hope, she reached out for help.
Within hours, our team sprang into action. We arranged transport to a specialized children’s hospital, ensured that Priya met the right doctors, and covered the cost of the life-saving surgery. For days, Priya sat outside the ICU, praying for her child’s survival. When the doctors finally told her the surgery was successful, tears streamed down her face. Her son had been given a second chance at life. Today, that baby is a healthy, happy toddler who runs around his home, filling it with laughter.
"I thought I was going to lose him. But now, he is healthy, he is smiling, and it feels like he has been given a new life. I can’t thank you enough," Priya says with gratitude.
Her story is a reminder that healthcare should never be a privilege. At Swaraj Foundation, we are determined to ensure that no mother has to watch her child suffer due to a lack of medical access.
Nine-year-old Raju had never set foot inside a school. While other children in his village carried school bags and books, he carried a tray of tea cups, working long hours at a roadside stall. His father had passed away, leaving the family in deep poverty. His mother, struggling to provide food, had no choice but to send Raju to work instead of school.
But Raju always dreamed of learning. He would pause outside school windows, watching students writing on blackboards, tracing letters he longed to understand. He knew that education was the key to a better future, but for children like him, that future seemed out of reach.
When the Swaraj Foundation team visited his area for our Education for All initiative, we noticed Raju working instead of studying. We spoke to his mother, understanding their struggles, and immediately enrolled Raju in our free schooling program. We provided him with books, a uniform, and food support so his mother wouldn’t have to depend on his small earnings.
On his first day, Raju nervously held a pencil, tracing his name for the first time. Today, he is a bright student, determined to become a teacher so he can help other children like himself. "I used to think school was only for rich children. Now I know that I can learn too," he says, beaming with pride.
Education is not a privilege—it is a necessity. Raju’s story reminds us why we must continue fighting to make quality education accessible to all.
